Public Works Program

During the year 2005/06, the Public Works Program area needed to assess the existing 5-year Roads Upgrade Plan approved by Council, to update both the estimates and the scope of work. 2005/06 plans included Middle Side Road, and then Lake Road from the park to Pat’s Point which will still be completed but over a two or three year timeframe.

In addition, water services were upgraded to several new areas on a fee for service basis, to improve the safety of the water for residents who had unstable well and sand point systems. This work will also continue as funding becomes available, and as needs are defined.

Work continues in the GIS (Geographic Information System), in conjunction with the Lands Department, to input and document all services such as water lines, sewage lines, all 911 addresses, cemetery plots, etc. This will be a valuable resource for the First Nation once fully completed and functioning. In addition, on a summer contract, Kevin Jackson designed a computerized “real time” monitoring system for the water treatment plant, which shows not only levels at a glance but also chemical levels, etc.

On-going training continues to meet the new requirements for water and wastewater treatment, and staff are meeting or exceeding grade requirements on a regular and consistent basis. Of staff, George Shawnoo is the first to have reached full level 4 qualifications and specialized qualifications in the area of water and wastewater treatment management.

The Public Works area is responsible for road maintenance, water treatment and infrastructure, waste management services and infrastructure, cemetery maintenance, ditching, culverts, and other infrastructure needs and functions. Staff, who are mostly cross-trained in all areas, include the Manager as well as George Shawnoo, Rudy Bressette, James George, and Jason Henry.
